Morality is our epistemic immune system
To summarize the past few days: Morality is our epistemic immune system.
Morality enables trust in the truth — without which, all thinking seems to be futile.
Immorality creates desires that compete against the desire for truth. The guiltier you secretly feel, the easier you are to fool, because you want to be fooled into thinking you’re innocent. It can be really painful to realize how many apologies and reparations we owe, and the threat of pain literally makes us stupid.
Desires that compete against the desire for truth are the top enemy, because the intellect cannot override the will, and desires that compete against truth are features of the will.
Can you sense how all these things are starting to fit together? 😊
